I was recently looking at a Roman coin, and the term Cohen-40 was on the holder. What does this mean? Sorry for the Newb question, I'm totally ignorant on these.

In the late 19th century a prominent French numismatist, Henri Cohen, produced in French a comprehensive catalog of Roman Imperial coinage titled Description historique des monnaies frappees sous l'Empire romain communement appelees medailles imperiales. In this catalog he devised a numbering system for every coin type then known. His numbers started with 1 for each emperor for coins in all three metals used and arranged alphabetically by reverse type.

The Seaby catalogs on Roman Silver Coins follow the Cohen system. To know what coin is referred to by the reference Cohen-40, it is necessary to know under which emperor the coin was produced.

Unfortunately RSC skips the Gallo-Roman emperors entirely. However, the 4th revised edition of the Roman Coins catalog by Sear not only includes them, but it apparently lists your coin.

If your coin has a FIDES MILITVM reverse with Fides standing left holding two military standards, then Cohen-40 corresponds to RIC V,pt2 #72, and its obverse is illustrated on plate XIV. Your coin is listed in Sear as #3176.

Both Sear and RIC cross reference to Cohen.
