When the annual First Spouse Medal Set went on sale September 21, I jumped on the U.S. Mint website and ordered two sets to fill my albums. I received the sets in the mail today, but was disappointed when I looked at the first set and noticed a large gash across the cheek and nose of the Bess Truman medal. The other three medals in the envelope looked fine.
I then opened the second envelope and was astonished to see a similar gash across the face of same spouse, Bess Truman.
These aren't just contact marks, but appear to be deep cuts into the metal.
Now I have to decide whether it's worth the effort to return the sets and buy new ones. Considering the $16.95 cost of the four-medal set, the individual medals really only cost about $4.24 apiece. I'll probably just keep them.
I would return the set and re order as well. I think...if you call the mint and tell them your coins are actually damaged they will issue a return tag so the effort to return them would be minimal. Yes...definitely return that set.
They should be returned and a new replacement product sent, with all shipping costs paid by the supplier. no mint worth it's reputation should send that sort of damaged product to a collector.
Actually, I agree with "poor Bess Truman"; she looks like she is suffering from deep grief in this image. Certainly brings out the compasion in me!
