US Mint - Maryland and Florida coins from the U.S. Mint's 50 State Quarters™ Program are traveling aboard the New Horizons spacecraft. William Krawczewicz, who designed the MD coin in 2000 and now works at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, shares his thoughts on the voyage.
What is the spacecraft even doing? Making 50 cent change on a Martian dollar? Does it matter the real coin is in space, since the radio waves of the television/satellite cable are well further than a ship could get now with the real coin.
US Mint needs better videos. I have seen more info about them on How It Made, and learned more about it than ever in school. Thats a shame with all the info it could give at the cost of the mint hiring a small filing crew to take videos of more things that don't require over 9000 security clearance and your first-born son.
(I really don't like the Maryland or Florida State Quarters, but good for this guy that designed it.)
