I am interested in what started people collecting. Without writing a book about it - love to hear the stories.
I had one of my staff tell me about the 2000 dollar mule about 6 years ago. I went home, checked my change and found one. Then 4 days later got another in my change at the golf club. That got me going!

I started thanks to the State Quarters. Really liked the unique designs on them and it rose my interest in coins.

inherited my grandfather's coin collection which I sat on for 6 or 7 years until I worked out what to do with it.Then decided to sell it off and in the process learnt about grading and value which got me interested in collecting better and rarer examples. After selling off the original 40 odd kilos of coins I was able turn the proceeds into a smaller but better collection which continues to grow one coin at a time

My Dad used to pull silver from circulation in the late 60s and early 70s when I was a kid. He also helped me fill Whitman Penny boards back then and I still have the Penny boards. I didn't collect any coins from 1977 to 2007 and got back in due to rising PM prices and have been back at it for 8 years now.

For me this all started in the mid 70's. I was born in 1971. Bicentennial US coins with special reverses came out in 1975 and 1976. I probably started collecting around 1976 or 1977, 1978 at the latest. I loved the special reverse of the Washington quarter with the Drummer Boy. Around the same time I discovered the Ike dollar with the Eagle Moon Landing Reverse. That is the greatest coin reverse I have ever seen. Started collecting shortly thereafter. Bought some coins at the coin shop and joined the county coin club and would buy something cheap at the auction every time I went. Stopped collecting coins for baseball cards. Not sure when, but guessing it was around 7th grade or so. Man was that a bad idea in hindsight. Started collecting again in my late 30's and have been back at it ever since. Found this CCF place one year ago. In that one year my knowledge about coins has more than doubled and I am much much more confident in my purchases. Greatly expanded my numismatic interests too. I became a numismatic wanderer looking at all you guys' great coins. One year ago I was all US coins and mainly silver and gold, no lowly cents. Now with my brain on CCF, I have an ugly type set that is getting upgraded that includes all the oddball denominations. Lots of early American copper coins. Some ancient coins. Heck I even got my dream coin of the past year in January, my avatar a 1946 United Nations monetary unity pattern in silver. Have to like the one world currency coin with the flags of the USA, Russia, France, England, and China on the obverse. So to sum up a long story, that drummer boy reverse quarter drew my eye originally in circulation. The Ike Apollo Moon Landing Reverse got me into collecting. CCF though is what really got me going as a collector.

Great topic! I came to Australia from the UK in 2011. I'd never collected coins before, and was getting used to using Australian money when I was given a 1988 Bicentennial 50c coin and a 1970 Captain Cook 50c coin in change somewhere. I remember thinking at the time that they were unusual designs, but it wasn't until I received a 2012 plain poppy $2 coin in my change that I decided to start collecting.

1951 Jubilee two bob my grandfather gave me; I was about seven years old at the time - I am nearly 70 now. Still remember like it was yesterday!
My father gave me a George 1V shilling when I was about 12 years old which helped me to my addiction. This coin was found abandoned on the floor of a large safe belonging to the company my dad worked for. He was asked to crack it open, because the keys had been lost.
What got me completely hooked was when one of my high school friends brought a show 'n tell sestertius of Nero to school. Bought my first gold coin (a half sovereign) when I was 15. Had a bit of money to spend on coins, because I had a job from 12 years old.

My grandfather owned a pub in the late 60's and he would pull the predecimal coins out of the till and would keep them. These are the coins that I would inherit about 35 years later

My interest came in 2 phases.
Firstly as a child in the mid 70s I was always excited when finding sixpences in my change and the captain cook 50c which was the only commemorative in circulation back then.
Then in 2011 I was watching an episode of "Collectors" on the ABC and I thought how good it would be to get back into collecting again and buying things that I could have only dreamt about when I was a child.

All you need to do to get started is to get born, the rest just happens otherwise you would not be reading CCF. The first thing I can remember collecting was match boxes. They were easy to get - mum & dad used them to light the Metters Early Cooker.
I remember the decimal changeover in 1966 and kept a few coins. In 2013 I got a mint set for my BIG SIX-O. Less than a week after that I was at Downies Town Hall and bought the proof set.

My step father collected coin, so I started collecting about the time that the old paper currency was being replaced by polymer.

I went to Canada for a year, I noticed that they had different currency, so I looked into it and realised most other contries had different currencies as well (who knew?), and so I decided to start collecting them, after a while I decided to start doing Australian as well. And that's how I became a coin collector.

I kicked off my coin and note collecting back in the early 60's and have been collecting ever since. I still manage to collect mutes, both paper and polymer from a friend at a bank. I spose that my kids will inherit a pretty good collection when I shuffle off this mortal coil. I can clearly recall my dad telling me back around 63 to save all of my change as the silver content of our coins was worth more than the face value. I did this and now I have a pretty good collection of pre-decimal coins, unfortunately most are post 36.
