OK this looks like Ottoman Silver or Gold and Silver mixed Struck in Tunisia if I'm right, the year of mint is 1188, and has Sultan Mustafa on the revers. Any help with this one, Ill post more info about it as soon as I can.

Others will know better, but the year 1188 is likely in the Muslim calendar, not the Christian, so would be several hundred years newer than the date would otherwise suggest. At least, that is my understanding.

I certainly looks like Tunis mint, Year AH 1188 (= 1774 AD), Ottoman sultan Mustafa III. It'll be made of billon (base silver). All we need to know now is the denomination: half-piastre (should weigh about 7½ grams and be 28mm diameter) and full piastre (about 15 g, 35mm diam.) are recorded for this date and ruler. Halves are scarcer.

Tunis is another generally scarce Ottoman mint, and these particular coins are scarcer than normal - perhaps because Mustafa III actually died in AH 1187. It must have taken awhile for the word to reach distant Tunis.

A fairly scarce coin, but fairly well worn, too. In VG condition, the CV in Krause for the half piastre (KM# 59) is $80, for the piastre (KM# 57) it's $40. I have no idea what the hole will do to the price. Being holed was apparently a common fate for these coins; one-third of the pictures in the 1700's Krause for Tunis show holed coins.

Sap thanks for the info, very informative information, Ill post the weight and diameter of this coin, but there is one coin that is driving me crazy and its a new coin found in Libya, I'm seeing its keeper tonight and if all go's good and get to buy it then ill post it on a new thread. Its a big large silver ottoman coin struck in Libya. it probably has 30 grams or a little less but ill see all that as soon as I get my hands on it.

The one in the top four pics is a billon piastre, KM# 90, from the last year of reign of Mahmud II (AH 1255 = 1839 AD). CV $10 in Good, $15 in Fine; it's hard to grade with the weak strike and damage.

The lower one is a copper burbe dated AH 1182 (= 1768/69 AD), "date at bottom" variety. KM# 52.2, CV $12 in Fine.

Sap I just found out that the one at the bottom that looks like copper and has Sultan Mustafa next to the Silver coin that has Sultan Mahmud is Silver. I used a liquid solvent to grade it and it gave me a strong read of Silver. I also lightly cleaned it just to mack sure that it was Silver, and turned out just like the one on its left, Silver. It is the same one that's dated 1182 (= 1768/69 AD

Sap any info on the small silver Tunisia coin dated 1182.
