My goal over the last year has been to try and put together a set of 5 cent silver pieces from 1858 to 1921 VF or better. This includes all varieties as listed in the Charlton. It's proven to be quite a daunting task! From this experience, I've realised that the hardest part isn't the "key dates". Because with enough money, you could buy one at any time online or through a dealer. The hardest part has been the varieties.

I looked at about 30 1891s the other day and these were literally the last two coins I looked at. They aren't particularly valuable but I got more enjoyment finding these two then when I've gotten any expensive "key date" in the mail.

The 8/8 has some issues including bad rim nicks and evidence of an old cleaning and will have to be replaced eventually. But it does show some interesting features including a Die Cud that fills the "V" in Victoria (I could be off on my terminology) and doubling throughout the coin.

Very nice!

There are probably a 100 or so varieties of 5c from 1858 to 1936...I've been collecting for 5 years and I'm still finding new ones!! :)

I'm hoping to have a catalogue of those out in the next 6-12 months

look forward to your book, please save me a copy. Hopefully I finish my set before it comes out so I don't have to spend any more chasing these varieties down!

Note that Charlton's lists both the 8/8 and 9/9 as OBV2 coins. The two coins posted here are OBV5 and OBV2.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...
