My first forum post (aside from welcome).
I've ended up here a few times and been amazed at the collective knowledge here.
Going through my 50 cent pieces today and came across something that I have not seen before. Sort of familiar with the 1944 near and far variations and all the photos I've checked seem to show just those.
I have 2 other 44's and they match those types - but the other one I have has the bar on the last 4 under the hoof by a good margin. Also seems to be less distance between the bottom of the 4 and the rim. There is also a very small dot between the 9 and the 4 - though it seems much smaller than the dots I've seen on other varieties.
So, any thoughts? If you want more images I'll post what you require.

Looks like Flat Back 9, Low Straight 4 Variety.
Don't know about the dot though. (Die chip?)
Nice picture by the way.

JimmyD is right on.... Flatback 9 with a very low 4.
Most of this variety are usually found with Reverse Die Clashes.
If the coin was in better condition you would see a 4/4 for the last 4.
Can't comment on the dot as it is not a commom feature on this variety.

Thanks for the replies - just the info I have been looking for.
So not such a rarity as to get excited about I guess and yes I'm sure it would help if the coin were in better shape.

Dots are probably the most common error features on all coins---caused by gas bubbles and imperfections in die steel which form die chips or cavities . These grow over time with use and provide us with a little bit of excitement ----my favourite is one on the 1858 20 cent where the dot was on the master die and was transferred to all 51 working dies which in turn produced the dot on all coins ever struck. Check out the obverse near the A of Regina.
