Can someone tell me when the decorative edge was added to the ducatoon (silver rider) of the United Netherlands? I have a 1711 silver rider with a plain edge. I recently bought a 1775 silver rider and noticed a rope-like edge. My 1648 lion dollar and 1661 leg dollar have a plain edge. Thank you.

Krause doesn't give info about the edges. There was a change in design (reflected in the allocation of different Krause numbers) in the 1730's. That's presumably when it happened.

The exact date varied from province to province. What provinces are yours from?

Sap - Thank you. I just bought a copy of the Krause Catalogue (1701-1800) on ebay for $19.99 plus $8 shipping. I suspected the 1730's because a lot of Chinese fakes dating 1734 have recently shown up on ebay at a starting price of $49.99. I am sure my 1711 silver rider is real because it is sea-recovered and the last digit of the date barely readable because of a planchet defect. I did not realize the Dutch coins had a decorative edge until I recently bought the 1775 [West Friesland] for $69. I cannot imagine why anyone would want a Chinese fake for $50 to $90 when a Grade I silver rider can be had for $125 or lesss.
