I recently bought these two coins, I presume are Roman. I was wondering if anyone could help identify them?

Thanks

The first coin is going to be a little tricky because two emperors Galerius and Maximinus II used the same legend with a slight difference in one or two letters on the obverse legend. Those letters are covered by dirt on your coin. So if you can clean it a little it would help. If I were to make a guess at this point I would say it's Galerius.

The second coin is Constantinus II and from the Fallen Horseman series, first issued after 348 AD.

First one may be Maximianus, possibly an antoninianus.

Bit hard to read, but the legends may be:

IMP C M A MAXIMIANVS AVG (obv)
CONCORDIA MI_LITVM (rev)

The first coin is a pre-reform Maximian late antoninianus with CONCORDIA MILITVM reverse, with XXI in the exergue and a Greek zeta (for officina 6) mark above that.

The Obverse inscription is IMP CMA MAXIMIANVS AVG. The absence of the PF in the obverse legend locates the mint specifically to Cyzicus, which alone is attested in RIC for this type of obverse inscription. However, this particular coin is unlisted and should be reported on the Forum website. Curtis Clay will probably be interested if he has not already seen one.

[Just read Bob's post and we are seeing the same things.]

[BTW the CsII falling horseman bronze is also from Cyzicus.]

Thank you all for your help.

Could anyone give a range of dates for the coins? I understand that the Constantinus II was issued after 348 AD but was there a rough end date?

Irbguy, I honestly know nothing about ancient coins. If this coin needs to be reported to someone or documented in anyway I will try to help but I have no idea where to start.

I do not know the diameter of your coin for certain, but by a process of elimination it appears that it should be in the neighborhood of 23-24mm, or 16-18mm.

If the larger, it is from the second group of bronze coinage from Cyzicus, first series dated 348-350. In that case, your coin is an AE2 (called a "Centenionalis") corresponding to RIC VIII #65 for the mint at Cyzicus.

If it is the smaller, it is from the third group, second series dated 351-354. In that case your coin is an AE3 corresponding to RIC VIII #104 with a pearl diadem.

The larger coin is much more rare than the smaller. BTW the emperor on the obverse was named after his grandfather and is Constantius II (two n only)

As for reporting the other coin, I will do that for you if you wish, but will have to refer any inquiries about details on to you. If I help you with that is that okay?

Thank you for the extra information.

Yes that is ok with me. I do not have the coins with me at the moment but when I do in about two weeks, I will try to give you the information you require to report the coin.

I finally received the coins today.

The Constantinus II is the smaller.

lrbguy, is there anything you need to know about the Maximianus?
