Possible slag inclusion in this 1985 Quarter I've had a while now. It's hard to get a reliable answer. I've been offered $400 for it but I find it hard to part with even if it was a good price. Can you tell me anything about this coin? How it might have gotten this way or how much it's worth? I have hi resolution shots of the holes if you want a closer look

I don't see a slag inclusion. Your quarter is just corroded.

lesson here is that if someone offers you a really high offer on an iffy error you should take it.

Welcome to CCF Sorry but your coin is not an error, it sustained its damage after it left the mint.

Hi Keirris, I metal detect underwater and have found many examples like yours. Most nickel coins I find buried underwater in the sand/soil get these pits in them, perhaps the PH values of the water and the sand/soil cause this reaction.

It's a coin worth 25 cents, take that offer and run.

Coin found in the sewer system and you turned down $400 bucks...........good story, but nothing more. This type of damage is frequently found on pure nickel coins that REALLY are found in the sewer systems. The City crew used to bring all sorts of this goo into my shop in the day. Your story sort of reminds me of two guys who are in a high stakes poker game with no real clue as to what they are doing.

$400 will buy you a really nice 1978 25c struck on a 1c planchet... I just cannot fathom _ANY_ error collector offering that kind of money for a corroded coin.

Yeah if you still have that guy's number I'd give him a call and see if the offer still stands, because chances are you'll never find anyone naive enough to offer you that kind of money again!!

Its surprising how depressing finding out the coins worthless but it's still an interesting piece for my collection. Alas the guy knows better now. Mark my words! I will find a genuine error coin to put in my collection yet!

May I reccomend subscription to a numimatic error journal... or perhaps going to a show and looking at verified errors first...
