Hi all

Have a strange collection of odd coins picked up over the years many from travalling the world.

I found this one recently in a late relatives belongings along with Victorian pennies, half pennies, farthings, florens and more.

Drawn a blank on it searching other than the suggestion it's a gaming token or old fake?

same size as a Victorian farthing at about 21mm OD

any help gratefully received

thanks

Looks to be about the right size and design, but I don't think they made 1/2 guineas in 1771. I'd vote for replica, since it doesn't look gold.

I had it down as a £3 fake so nothing to loose cleaning it
not copper then how do I tell if it's brass?
my guess is gold does not tarnish like brass?

Yup, spend a few of those to some sods, then get out of dodge.

Gold can tarnish but it doesn't happen easily (though pure gold would only really tarnish if exposed to something) One reason people often put coins/medals to their mouth is that gold is soft. When I was watching the Olympics all the people winning gold medals were putting them in their mouths mimicking biting it to see if it is soft (not sure they make the medals out of gold now and who would want to dent it anyway?)

There are lots of guinea replica's around, some were used as gaming tokens (I have a couple, one is gold plated and says "in memory of the good old days")

Thanks for the replies, Brass fake it is then.

Will have to dig through and see what's interesting out of the other coins I have.

If I recall correctly, Olympic gold medals are just gold plated (silver?)- I think the last solid gold ones were used in 1924, or that was the first year they didn't use solid gold.
