I came across this Trade dollar which is so obviously not real that I can't imagine the original intention was to create a counterfeit. Has anyone seen anything like this before, or have any ideas as to what its purpose was?

Thanks.

Apparently an early work of a counterfeiter who did not have an actual copy of the coin that he was counterfeiting, but rather just a rough drawing to work from.

It could have been made as a symbol to scare away coin thieves, similar to the way a cross works with vampires. When a would be thief sees something like this on top of a collection of coins, they would shy away from it.

Thanks All. I bought it for about $10 in London 15 years ago just for the curio value. It's such a bad counterfeit, there has to be a good story behind it.

Tat is one of the most horrendous counterfeits I have ever seen! It kind of looks like one of those plastic coins that you can get in sets of play money.

How much does it weigh?

PCGS' CoinFacts 1875-S, MS-68, regular strike vs. the OP's it.

Oh how I feel for the poor souls of the low information crowd thinking they're snapping it up for some bargain price...
