Hi All,

I recently bought a 1797 Cart wheel 2 pence coin in near uncirculated condition.

As far as I know the lettering on this type of coin is "incused" and not "raised".

The specimen I have, has raised lettering ie both the date, BRITANNIA, GEORGIUS III etc is raised lettering.

Is this correct? or am I sitting with a fake?

Thanks

It is a fake in my opinion. I have had and sold several and you are correct, the lettering is always incuse. Real ones are made of pure copper and are very soft. Consequently, every bang, ding, and rim bruise is very easily inflicted and one in that condition would have had to have been put away (and left untouched) on its first day of issue.

That's good.
I'll give the seller the benefit of the doubt with an honest mistake.
