I just heard theat there are counterfeit NGC slabbed coins around. If you are interested in, you can go to NGC website to see the instruction to id them. Did anyone heard or know how to tell the counterfeit PCGS coins?

I went to the NGC site, and read the article (under news). In my opinion, expecting people to discern between really minute font differences isn't a practical diagnostic. Years ago, I was a type designer, and I'm rather skeptical that the average buyer will spot those markers. Furthermore, in many online auctions (not just ebay) you cannot possibly see those details. The top-tier TPGs need to devise fool-proof verification for their own product. You cannot expect your product to ensure security and value if it can be so easily copied. Otherwise, all of your slabs will be questioned. But like everyone says..."buy the coin, not the slab" Ok, rant over

Btw, you might want to CC this to the TPG forum.

And after seeing that news bulletin from NGC, how quickly do you think the makers of those fake slabs change their designs to make it even more like the real thing ? You can bet the new ones out there will have the new fonts and holographs.

Right--and once the fake slabs are spelled correctly, it may prompt buyers to say "oh, this one's spelled right, it must be legit"

As I suggested elsewhere, the top-tier TPGs should now provide a service whereby they authenticate their own slabs. Don't trust anything less than an NGC slab within-a-slab!

Seriously though...this problem arose from the market success of top TPGs and the trust/value assigned to these slabbed coins. Unless this is solved, people will go back to only looking at the coins--not a bad idea, imo!
