What are some of the common 'types' of Type Set albums out there? What do they usually include? I'm thinking about starting a type set but there are certain coin types that are insanely expensive. Particular the first coin issues of the late 1700s.

The most popular is Dansco 7070 and I've heard Intercept is also coming up with a type set album. Dansco is 1800 and on.

UAP, I have an Intercept Shield type set album and really like it. It has pretty much the same series as the 7070 but no gold. That is the primary reason that I chose not to do a 7070. There are enough other expensive coins in the type set without having gold to deal with. The IS comes with the slip cover but you can get one for the Dansco. The Dansco 7070 can be purchased without the gold page which is usually sold as a supplemental. I have seen older Whitman type albums that include 18th century Draped coinage but the Dansco is only 19th and 20th century- 76 or so slots total including 4 for half dollar commems.

A little off topic, but if you have a very small budget, Whitman used to make a 20th Century type set folder (the kind you push in the holes). #9046. It's great for a beginning collector as it just asks for standard stuff - although with the price of silver, it'd cost about $50 to fill even using junk coins.
You can find them used at shops and shows for a quarter or $.50. Like I said, not what you're asking for, but ok for anyone on a YN budget!!

In addition to that, I saw a Harris/U.S. Mint 20th century type set at Borders. It looked very easy to fill and I may buy one for my son.

I've seen several different 20th Century Type sets at coin shows. I purchased one that is two sheets of plastic, with a cardboard inside wit slots for each coin. Held together with a screw at each corner. Nice presentation type. You can see both sides, put in a wood frame and hang it if so desired. I plan on working on my own type set soon. I'll buy a blank Whitman Album cover, Blank pages for each denomination, and fill as I like. Might not be what people like but so what, it's mine. From what I see on these forums though it looks like if you want to be a conformatist, you just have to have a Dansco 7070.

The one you described sounds like mine,
it was an old HARCO Coinmaster album.
If you have this one, it is its loaded with PVC,
I had it in the early '80
and it infected my coins.

The most popular and well known is the Dansco 7070, which is most types from 1800-present.
Whitman makes a type set album which I think encompasses every major type from 1793-present, but I'm not too sure.
Library of Coins made the most complete and best (IMO) album out there. It will be almost impossible to ever complete, but it has every single type ever. They stopped making this album in the 80's, I think, but they're not too hard to find. There are two albums, the first ones goes through the quarters, and the second one goes through dollars not including gold. I'll e-mail my friend and get him to send me the complete list.

I have the 7070 and I'm sure you will enjoy it. If some of the coins are too expensive, buy a copy. So long as you like what you have, it doesn't matter and, frankly, you'll see more detail. Having said that, there is still something very cool about an original coin even if you just see the outlines and text. Put another way, even an about poor set is a piece of history. And if you are fortunate, you can upgrade later.

I found two the other day and one of them is going to be insanely hard. It is a Whitman album for Large Coins and holds one of every dollar from flowing hair to Eisenhower and the other is a Whitman folder which is really neat. It has holes for twentieth century type coins up to the Peace dollar and five spots for a birth year set. |

I looked at the photos of the Intercept and photos of the 7070 and have a couple of observations. It seems to me that several types are omitted. Just off the top of my head, all three types of 3 cent silvers--only one is included The no stars varieties of the Liberty Seated half dime and Dime. The arrows and rays of the Liberty Seated quarter. I also consider the 1921 Peace dollar a separate type. Place one beside the later ones and the difference is obvious. ( A case can be made that the 1921 Morgan dollar is different enough from the earlier ones) I am certain there are others. I supppose it is somewhat of an individual preference as to what are the major types of U.S. Coins. My preference is to place the types in 2x2 holders and construct my own type set. I do think that a completed album is a thing of beauty though. |

Just an addition to rohumpy's post on the Intercept album. It looks very nice but there's something I don't understand going on in the cents on page 1. They list the Memorial cent (1959-2008) and the Lincoln Head (2010-date) but don't have a place for the 2009. This would drive me nuts but, then again, I'm maybe too anal retentive. |

That was another reason I decided on the IS album; the 2009 cents. Since the album is brand new there are allowances for them.
I may still do a 7070 in the future. I have enough duplicates to start another one now. I just wanted to start a type set and the IS fit my needs. YMMV.
