Hi. I have found a 1984 dime that looks to have an error. My husband believes it is just warn but it looks to me as though the letters at the end of United and beginning of States are smeared towards the rim of the coin. All opinions are appreciated. Thanks.

This is the first ever time I am posting anything to anybody. You are the first post I see so I can only guess that the coin is just a not good strike and probably not anything special. I am very new to this but have collected for quite a few years. Don't think I helped you much.....kenyova

This looks more like a slight Grease Fill.
The absence of die flow on the rim area and with only some devices are affected and not all leads me to think this.
When there is a blockage of the die with grease, the deeper part of the tapered devices are not formed.
Where the blockage happens the devices become wider, like what we see on this dime.

I would also normally ask to see the obverse as well but coop most likely nailed it
