I am quite new to collecting ancient coins.. I have 16 now the last two I obtained were on ebay and I've got a feeling that they are fakes. They are much duller than the previous coins I own and have pit marks on them. I was wondering if anyone could help me identify them as genuine or fake ancient silver coins. I had thought about getting an acid test kit but was advised that this would ruin the coins. Thanks in advance!

to the community I think the Nero denarius is OK, at least I didn't fi9nd a die match on the fake reports. Going to need a larger picture on the Domitian to say for sure, but outwardly it looks OK also. Here is a link to the Ancient fake coin report. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/

The marks on the Nero head and lettering are parallel, but do not appear on the field. That suggests to me that this coin has been scraped on a hard surface such as concrete or a rock, probably to remove hard encrusted dirt after it had been dug up. My first inclination is: geniune. Metal stress detail from striking in the edge cracks support this.

I wouldn't bother testing them.

My personal opinion is that the Nero is a dud. I can't remember exactly where I have seen this dopey looking portrait but I have definitely seen it before.
Based on my strong opinion on Nero I am hesitant to endorse the Domitian. I have no reason to doubt it is real excepting that it is next to a coin I am 99% sure is NG.

The whole world is being inundated with 'fakes'. Recently I have seen more than a few Facebook pages devoted to the collecting of ancient coins which appear to be nothing more than outlets for these things. People post pictures of coins which appear to have both spray painted patinas and or obvious reproductions with altered surfaces to fool the unwary. The comments on these pages are chock full of gleefull buyers who proudly show off their $75 Julius Caesar denarius and get quite irate when anyone questions the validity of the claim. I myself got tossed out of a UK forum when someone posted an amateurish photo of an obviously altered WRL denarius of Caesar. The would be buyer vouched for the seller based on the fact that he once "knew" the guys sister. I won't even go there ......... but buying coins from 'some guy' whom you have no real knowledge of and who claims to find the most extraordinary things in his spare time will always be a risky endeavor. The world is full of "interesting" people. As Mark Twain once wrote
"Nothin sells like tellin folks what they wants to hear"

The quality of the fakes appears to be getting better. Scary times we live in.

I will certainly agree that the Nero is a dopey looking portrait, unlike any style I am familiar with.
