I would have gotten so mad I'd rip the two dollar bill in half right in front of her, and said OK here is two singles; can I please purchase a roll of nickels ?

I agree, T-BOP, but I would also place my right hand inside my coat to imply that I might have a weapon.

I agree with the younger generation like teens and early twenties not knowing older currency. I sometimes pay for my dinner from Wendy's on Friday night in halves and I am sometimes asked by younger kids what are these? I say they are half dollars or 50 cent pieces they are real. I always get a look like I have 3 heads. I am scared some days for the future of these kids, its kinda scary.

Imthealphaomega, I think sometimes the confusion by the cashiers is a result of not knowing what cash register tray to put the halves, dollar coins and $2 bills into.

While Legal Tender rules do not apply here
Why not?
Because it is not settling a debt. It is a pending purchase (or exchange), the debt has not yet occurred.

Legal Tender only applies to a debt, not a purchase or currency exchange.
