I find it strange that she would not take them.

She probably never saw one before and didn't think they were valid currency. While Legal Tender rules do not apply here she really should have taken them, if nothing other than to be nice to a potential customer.

But she works at a bank...surely she'd have seen a $2 before. Unless it was her first day or something (or first day on Earth even).

I had tellers at my banks tell me they had only seen a Duece once or twice in the several years they worked there. There is so much less cash going through these days they just don't get them enough to be familiar with them.

I get a bit inpatient myself. I would had probally ask for a manager immediately after being declined and wheter she was serious haha. I may ask her why first but generally manager. I getting in my upper twenties and at the point where younger clerks annoy me haha.
I also go quickly from manager to general manager to district manager to corporate. I usually don't ever have to do this with banks but I had to do that when they changed my free checking account to pay without telling me and started charging $8 a month. I went straight to the bank manager and then corporate who told me he was wrong and it was simple just to switch the account type over to avoid the fees lol.
The big thing to realize is sometimes small manager make policies that run counter to corporate policies to save time or effort in odd ways that hurt the bottom line while trying to increase profitability on paper

First I heard of a bank teller not accepting them. Convenience store clerks I could see, but the banks know they are real.

SSK you jsut hae some very terrible banks where you are. I don't remember how old you are or if you said in any of the other thread, but you or maybe a parent needs to go into these banks with you. sometimes a younger person gets treated like trash because banks are jsut jerks as mentioned in your other recent thread. Adults might intimidate the teller a bit more than anyone they THINK is younger and naive. But for all I know you play center on a football team and could benchpress Walter Peyton so you might not need the help of someone else. If that is the case I misunderstood the "kid" part of your name

Why would anyone voluntarily deal with a bank to begin with?
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

Well not everyone has a CU, and you can't deal with the Mint or FRB on ANY public level to get money at face value. Banks are given that ability, and hold some responsibility with it, but they refuse to shoulder that responsibility that comes with the government saying their entity, "bank" gets special treatment like the support given to the USPS.
IF the government decided that the FRB was to take over banking for normal things like checks and such and distribute cash directly to banks, then banks would lose their entire business and shut down. Ergo the duties banks have but no longer perform are already there to protect them under the New Deal setup of the FRB system to reduce work load on the Mint in distrubting the money they made.
IF anyone could do without banks, there wouldn't be anymore and the world would be a better place for it. Sadly they are a necessity in the modern world.

It would have been interesting to know why the teller would not take the bills.
SSK ... do you have a account with that bank?
I have seen banks not want to deal with people that do not have accounts.
People ....are different.
Some tellers might be annoyed by someone coming in and always doing something unusual.
Some tellers don't mind and can be willing to help the collectors.
I bring my bank tellers donuts every once in a while. I also tell them what to watch out for, and offer to purchase from them, if they find any silver or collectable bills.
Many times there will be two or three tellers wanting to show me what they have.
--------------------------------------
My suggestion would be to talk to the teller, find out if there is some problem. And try to go into the banks when they are not to busy to help.
