Do you look only for Silver?
Do you look for varieties?

When I first got into this 4 years ago I searched Pennies for Wheats and Indian Heads only

When I searched Nickels,Dimes, and Half Dollars I only looked for silver or Proofs.

Now I'm starting to be more interested in finding Variety coins. (Especially when searching Eisenhower's)

Just curious to see how many of you actually do one or the other, or maybe even both!

I search for anything that may be worth $$$, in this order:

Silver
Key dates
Varieties
noticeable Errors (Clips, off-centre strikes etc)
Doubling

I have found a lot of silver, I have found 4 or 5 coins worth over $100

Searching pennies, nickles, dimes and quarters

I edge search dimes as I have a hard time reading their dates. Halves I edge search first but then check for 1987's, Nifc, clad if I missed them and proofs. Cents I search for copper and dates also.

I've gone through Millions of cents, Nickels and dimes. I feel like I might have missed out on searching for variety coins.... Just one really nice variety coin could be worth more than all the silver I've gotten from click clacking (crhing).

If I find any that are in mint state with full steps (pennies and nickels) I save them as well.

When I as actively hunting it was to fill holes, then it was for silver and wheat cents. I never looked for minor varieties, only the ones Dansco said I needed.

When I search, I only look for silver, copper, hole filler, LWC or IHC or a better grade coin to replace my coin with. I just started looking for error, but I'm sure that I miss a lot of them when looking at coins.

I keep silver coins because I don't have all the holes filled in my folders. One day I hope to be able to trade one silver X for another silver X to fill a hole.

I mostly just keep what I want to keep depending on each coin. I will never be interested in playing catch all the Pokemon. That is why I choose the folder that closest resembles what I want in my collection and fill their holes.

No 2 collectors collect the same way. 1 person could be collecting pennies fresh from the Mint and keeping on the best BU example, another one could just be keeping all the copper they find, while yet another is only keeping non-Memorial backed ones. No need to reason out the various ways, just try to get the coins you need before the next guy gets it or worse, someone melts it down.

Good idea.

I have mentioned it before, but I traded extra silver with a dealer to fill out my Franklin half dollar album.
