Can someone please tell me what might had caused the letters on the reverse of this nickel to pretty much be gone? Also the second s in states look a little weird to me.

This is referred to as "struck though". While often tough to tell what it was struck through (grease, staple, cloth, ect) it is a mint error. This is a minor and circulated example.

Well it would be nice to see the obverse of the coin. What year it is and such. But most likely it's Grease Filled Die. % 99 sure

Struck Through Grease.

By the way, Copperpennyconnection: It is actually fairly easy to see struck through grease/staple/cloth:

Grease (notice the devices are missing? The grease fills the devices):

Staple (retained, but easy enough to distinguish, the staple does not fill devices as grease does. Also, the areas around the staple are not raised as would be if the staple were forced into the coin or was dug into the coin):

Cloth (Notice the pattern. Again, cloth does not fill the devices as grease does):

Spring:

But grease is the common cause for letters not being formed.

I forgot about the struck through spring! It's actually a little confusing. It must be retained right? Otherwise I don't see how the design is printed unless it was printed ON the spring. Also looks like there is a shadow cast from the spring.

That brings up another point for the retained struck through staple: You can see the 'C' in "MONTICELLO" (as well as other design elements) is partially printed on the staple
