Beware of Counterfeit NGC Slabsby Susan Hadley

quote:
First off, I want to applaud NGC's decision to go public with this information. Unlike certain other top tier grading services who seem to sweep the problems under the rug, NGC has made the issue very public in order to protect us all. If you've bought any NGC-slabbed coins, especially online, in the past few weeks, check them against the diagnostics NGC provides to ensure that they're genuine.

Here's a question: once the forgers fix those spelling issues and font details, how then are buyers able to distinguish real from forgery?

KurtS - exactly.

can't weigh a slabbed coin, can't test with a magnet, hard to measure diameters, and can you really get a good look at the rim?

Gotta look at the coin and determine if it is real or not.
I know... easier said than done. I myself almost got duped last week. But knowledge, not blind faith in a slab will always come out on top.

How is it that these people are intelligent enough to counterfeit a coin and a slab, but mess with simple spelling errors? Very bizarre.

Chinese law - they are "liknesses", not counterfeits. that way it can't come back to the Chinese govt.

First off, I am sorry for necroing this thread...

But I have a question involving these NGC slabs. According to the links provided and after reading the articles I think I have succeeded in purchasing 3 fake NGC slabs. (all from ebay of course hehe)

My main reason for believing these are all fake/tampered is that there is a lot of edge damage, and on the NGC link it stated that all their hyphens on the labels are angled. The hyphens on my slab's label are perfectly straight. Are these straight hyphens enough to determine that my slabs are fake?

I wish I could post some pictures but my camera just doesn't have the detail..

Thank you for your answers in advance, and again, sorry for necroing the thread.

There is a big difference between fake and tampered with and sometimes the edges of the genuine slabs look "tampered with" depending on the pressure applied to the slab during the sealing process.

As to the hyphens NGC was commenting on the specific generation of holder that was being counterfeited. I don't know if slanted hyphens holds true on other generations of holder. (Most people don't pay too much attention to what generation of holder they have and could wind up comparing apples and oranges.

One key thing is are the coins real? Most if not all of the coins that fake slab so far have had fake coins in them, and the coins have not matched the labels grade wise. Pictures are really needed.

If it turns out the slabs ARE fake, and they aren't too expensive I would be interested in them.
