I have officially retired from coin roll hunting. For a couple of years I picked up half dollar rolls from my local bank. They always had a limit of five rolls, but were fairly accommodating overall. At first I found a few 40% and even a couple 90% Kennedy halves. I also got a handful of NFC's.

For some reason everything seemed to dry up and I haven't found anything worth keeping in months. I've decided it isn't worth the effort anymore. I wish good luck to all who are ambitious to keep looking!

Did you try getting coins at different branches, or even different banks? Could be you're getting your dumps back.

The other banks I tried in my area don't provide rolls of half dollars. I always dumped my halves at a local credit union so I shouldn't have gotten mine back. I'm not sure I wasn't getting someone else's though.

Only five rolls at a time? I spill that much!

Ever considered ordering an entire box?

I've retired myself, went cold turkey over a year ago, really miss it sometimes - oh well, there's always pocket change...

I would say if you have a bank that has rolls of halves they have to limit people on to begin with, you just found a good score. THAT BANK!

The problem lies in they fact they may be getting boxes for the bank, buying the good ones and tossing the rest back and missing some. If you were only wanting silver....I got no advice, I cannot think in terms of that goal...

If you want other coins, there's plenty out there of each denomination. You could probably make loose sets from 1965~2001 over time and sell them for over face for your time to someone for a while. (no fancy book or folder or flips, just loose coins).

I hear only 1 thing about silver, is that dimes are the next best thing to halves for chance at 90% silvers. I never found a 90% half yet, but got a dime and dozen nickels (35%) or so.

Just remember you haven't retired, you are just on vacation from it, and welcome back to the CRH insanity anytime! [insert crazy flailing smile emote thingy here] But we aren't going to wait for you to come back so don't take too long of the guys in the JFK hunters thread will have gotten everything before you return [:p]

Anyone will need a break at some point. Some breaks last months or years. Other days. I keep a light pace up but I'd like to increase. But then I think, maybe the pace I'm at is about right.

If I would have stopped hunting when I was in the middle of a 40+ box skunk streak, I never would have found the box with 214 Franklin halves...from the same bank that produced the majority of the skunk streak.

Bottom line - it's hard to draw conclusions from several boxes much less several rolls. There will be up's and downs and we naturally attribute the roller coaster to all kinds of reasons. You may be getting your own dumps; someone may be pulling the silver; it may be a down cycle; silver's just dried up in your area; etc... Truth is you'll never know what causes the dry streak and the lucky streak. There are too many variables. You just have to decide if you want to stay on the ride, push pause, or quit.

Never get boxes, always get customer rolled. I think you might be getting the same ones back considering that people rarely get half dollars. I have a photographic memory, so I do remember the same ones I went through.
