Looks like the die was getting worked over with heavy die polishing. Note how the column and field is loosing its normal design.

On a die chip, the die is loosing material and the die is falling away, making a raised area on the coins struck as the die crumbles away.

Makes sense. Very heavy indeed. Must have taken a call when the machine was running in that spot.

I had two rolls of the 2008-P given me from a friend and there was nothing special in the rolls, but the examples from a die breaking down. So I took 4 examples and made them in to a GIF.
