Is it just my imagination or could there be some fakery going on here?

Should-I-Be-Suspicious?

These two coins are being offered by the same seller at the same time. At first blush they look like different examples of the same type. But when I look closer it seems to me that the same set of dies for obverse and reverse was used to produce both coins on different flans. The example on the left is well centered; that on the right is shifted up on the reverse. The example on the left has had some of its high points of relief shaved down, but the structure of the design has all the parts in the same relative positions on both coins. For example, the lettering on the reverse appears in the same positions relative to the back of the eagle, and in the same proportions on both coins. The hair styles on the obverse are identical, the skewing of the mouths of the figures correspond, the size of the eyes in relation to the nose and width of the faces. All match.

I think these coins are of modern manufacture. What do you think?

Edit: I neglected to mention that they are being represented as triobols at weights in line with an Attic standard, but the standard for these pieces from Istros was not an Attic standard, so these weights do not correspond to a normal division of the stater.

I don't like the looks of them. There overall appearance is off IMO.

I have seen these exact coins all over ebay with varying degrees of "wear". I would assume that they are all counterfeit until proven otherwise.

These look wrong stylistically to me. I also believe they should be far more three dimensional where-as these appear somewhat flat. I too would be suspicious.

David, the coin on the left has been filed down a bit to simulate wear. That is why it looks so flat. The other coin is closer to what it looked like at the start. I don't think the photo caught much of the depth in that coin.
