It's a large date. That's why the S is so close.
I was going to answer first but my old account got broken or hacked.

The position of the mintmark has nothing to do with the variety. Mintmarks were added to working dies by hand through 1989 so positional variation is to be expected.

It's hard to see from your photos, but I think I can see some Mechanical Doubling.

Your first photo on this thread is OK but I personally find it not clear enough to distinguish MD from hub doubling. Is there any chance of getting a closer up shot with more definition?

Below the last reply and above the Quick Reply box find and select Reply To Topic.

When you get that screen you will see Upload Image toward the bottom. Select that and follow the instructions.

It's a piece of cake! (usually)
