ANA - A 1921 Morgan silver dollar owned by the American Numismatic Association ( ANA) and used in a course at the 2015 Summer Seminar recently was identified as a "Zerbe Proof." Summer Seminar instructors Michael S. Fey, John Baumgart and Isaac Wallie noticed distinguishing marks on the coin. The trio, who teach "Collecting and Investing in Morgan silver dollars: A Comprehensive Approach," noticed that the uncirculated specimen had prooflike fields (which is rare for 1921 dollars) and diagnostic die scratches at the U of UNUM and S of PLURIBUS. The coin was donated to the ANA in 1975.

The variety is named after Farran Zerbe, ANA president from 1908 to 1910. He visited the San Francisco Mint in 1921 to see the first striking of Morgan dollars. According to Fey, Zerbe was not pleased with the new design, and it is possible the mint tried to impress him by producing proof versions of the coin. It is believed Zerbe purchased between 20 and 200 of the coins directly from the mint.

"Although some believe these may be presentation pieces, all exhibit a prooflike appearance and unique die characteristics that indicate they were struck from a single pair of dies, which have now become known as Zerbe Proofs," Fey explains. Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), the ANA's official grading service, agreed with the three instructors' assessment and graded the piece Zerbe Proof (PF)-63.

"As soon as I saw the coin, I immediately realized it was a Zerbe Proof," says Fey. "After much discussion with my co-instructors, we agreed it needed to be sent for verification. We were beyond delighted when it came back as a Zerbe PF-63."

"This discovery is a great example of how the Summer Seminar benefits the Association and its members," says ANA Museum Curator Douglas Mudd. "By making the collection available for classes and to top experts in the field, such as Dr. Fey, it can be more accurately attributed, thereby enhancing the Association's educational mission."

Very nice information. I had to look it up as NGC list the price of the coin at $6900.00.

When I first got into morgans I had a nice and shiny 21 and came across the zerb info and thought I hit paydirt but it turned out to be polished. Oh to be young again lol. I think of that when I see new members posts all the time

I'm wondering why it took john and Mike to realize this though if the ANA has had it since the 70s

Who would you most trust to verify/attribute a unique coin such as this, three experts in the field of Morgan dollars from the ANA, or the "experts" from NGC?
Rest in Peace

Yeah, I'm not sure why it needed to be verified by anyone at NGC. If Michael and John called it a Zerbe proof that would end all doubt in my mind.

The coin had been sitting in a poly bag or Kointain in a paper envelope in the archived collection of silver dollars for quite a while. We decided to look through these for additional coins to show the class or coins that the ANA should have graded. This coin was obviously special as soon as we saw it. Michael saw it first, handed it to me saying he thought it was a Zerbe proof, and I agreed. The die markers were all there on both sides. Fun coin to play with!

The reason the coin was sent to NGC is because of the "official grading service" arrangement they have. The museum gets a certain number of coins graded free each year, and we recommended they use one of the gradings for this coin, as well as a few other raw coins that were of significant enough value that you don't want someone accidentally messing the coin up by dropping it or mishandling it, including a mint state 1894 dollar. NGC was not given the task of attributing this coin, rather they were told what it was. We may have told a grader present for the Summer Seminar in person in this case. If NGC weren't the official grading service, I would have recommended sending it to PCGS.

The thing is, there is no resale incentive involved in grading in this case, since the coin is part of the ANA's permanent collection. Doug Mudd, the curator, cautions against assigning a market value to the coin because it's not money that's available to the ANA and you don't want to make it look like it is.
