Thanks John. I have a hard time with this coin. I have been told AU 50, however I tend to think more of a XF 45.

I would be disappointed if it was cleaned. I purchased it from a local coin dealer. It was not represented as being cleaned. I know it is hard to tell sometimes from photos.

I'm in the AU-50 camp too. May have been lightly cleaned in the past, not too big of a deal since most coins of this age have been at least lightly cleaned. I think it will grade problem free if sent to a third party grader.

Nice half, with visible luster in the horizontal shield lines! I say AU-50 at least. Could grade higher, but it's hard to tell from just the photos.

Nice example of the small date/small letters type. Variety is Overton 111, the so-called "Child's Head", popular but not scarce (R1.) Crumbled rim, "sinking" date (high 8, low 3) and both shield lower die gouges are present on your coin, so that's a Good Thing for attribution.

AU53 seems about right.

The OLD cleaning won't retract much from the value at all. It is still a very nice AU53 half.

Thanks everyone for your expertise! I am learning a great deal about these. I recently bought 2 on ebay from a dealer in Texas for about half of what I gave for this one. I am looking forward to comparing them and trying to grade them. I bought another 1834 for comparison and a 1835 because I couldn't help myself!
