Gary Powers said in his autobiography that he was issued a half dollar on a necklace that hid a needle with enough poison to commit suicide if he chose to use it. He said upon his capture he realized what a foolish hiding place it was - what better souvenir than an American half dollar taken from an American pilot. Powers said when he saw a Soviet official draw it from a briefcase, he quickly explained what it was out of fear someone would discover the secret and hurt or kill themselves! He figured that would put him in an even worse predicament.
