Is there any particular reason for that? They struck quarters in Denver from 1906-1916 for the Barber, minus 1912.

They still minted 1912 D cents, 1912 D nickels, 1912 D dimes, and 1912 D halves.

Just caught my attention the other day while looking through the graysheet. I didn't even realize it until now and figured I'd google it and still came up with nothing. Maybe some of you guys know.

It's always interesting how there's absence sometimes like this. Is there any reason why the denver mint didn't start minting cents until 1911? Why were no nickels, dimes, or quarters minted in 1933, but cents were in Philadelphia & Denver, and halves in San Francisco?

I'm afraid curiosity has got the best of me...

Weird. I've never really thought of that.

I always assumed 1933 was about the Great Depression.

1933 was.

Usually why a mint does or doesn't make coins is dependent on previous mintages and whether or not additional coins are needed in the distribution area.

The pre-WW1 years were also pretty bad for the U.S. economy. If the economy is slow and not as many coins are needed, it makes sense to have each mint focus on particular denominations rather than each mint produce a smaller amount of each.

I would agree with KenKat. We were coming off from the Panic of 1907. There simply may not have been a need for them due to the recession that had just occurred.

Somehow we survived without them.
