So I went to the bank yesterday and bought a box of dimes ($250 worth). I was hoping to find some silver or some neat error coins. To my surprise, there was not one single silver dime in the box. I was hoping to find at least one. So, my question is, are there sorters that pull silver dimes out before rolling them. The box I got had a great variety of dates from 1965-present, but not one silver! darn.

Basically there are 100s or 1000s of others chasing a vanishing amount of silver.

I think you'll do better in the CHR forum: http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...FORUM_ID=147

I'm asking mods to move this, you'll get more thoughtful responses there. Maybe.

I havent searched dimes in about 6 months. I was doing about 2 boxes a week and averaging 1-3 dimes a box. Some boxes I would hit 3-5. others 0. Its all about quantity. I would have been considered someone who did not search a lot. There a people who search 2-3 times that in a week.

In terms of your sorter question. Banks wont have the sorters its people like you and I that are considered the sorters.

Morgand33 is right. CRH'ers are the sorters. If a machine rejects silver, (and we grab it) it's because it's programmed to reject "foreign" coin, which silver is.

Banks aren't in the business to sort silver. It would be a losing proposition, besides, they make plenty of profit on the interest and fees of account holders.

If you continue to search dimes, you will find silver. Don't give up; just up your volume!

CoinStar handles a large percentage of coins returning to circulation and they reject silver so a good percentage of silver coins that may find their way into bank boxes do not. Add to that the other CRH'rs and observant tellers, retail clerks and consumers and a good chunk of the rest are pulled.

The below is entirely conjecture on my part and I make no claim to its accuracy. I believe it to be true but can (and will) not be backing it up with facts:

The reason half dollar searchers seem more successful than dime and quarter searchers is that halves are much less handled by the public and they may be less apt to come into the fold via CoinStars. They seem to be turned in at banks more often.

That's part of the CRH game. Sometimes you light it up and sometimes you get lit up.
