I have a gold chain up for auction and I received a question about it asking me if the chain is hollow or solid. How do I go about finding out besides cutting it to see if it is solid or not?
Thank you.

Take it to a jeweler? Of if you can weight it, and it seems too light then it might be hallow?

Do a poor mans density check on it.

Half fill a small glass with water. Place it on a flat surface and as accurately as you can mark the level. Put the chain in the glass use a syringe to remove the water back to the level mark.
most syringes are marked in Milli liters or Centi liters. 1 Centi liter of water is 1 cubic centimeter. 1 cubic centimeter of pure gold should weigh 19.3grams If you know the purity of the gold you can adjust the figure. Its not a perfect way but it should show the significant difference a hollow chain would make to the density.
