Nicely purple toned dime straight for cello. Photo doesn't do it justice... anyways, what caused the markings on the rim? Thanks!

They seem to be perfectly aligned with the reeding on the edge. Can you post a picture of the edge? A close-up of the anomaly on the reverse would probably be helpful as well.

The most likely cause of the damage is the Mint Set heat sealer.

Automated mail sorting machine? I really have no idea. I would have left it in the cello though as now people are just going to likely assume PMD. If it was sealed in the original cello it would have had a more interesting story with it.

I would suspect a mail sorting machine as well, but it would also have left marks on the packaging. What did the envelope and cello look like?

I have seen several cents with a mark on the reverse like the one pictured. I have no idea what caused it though. Still Lookin.

We're talking about 2 related issues here, right? There's the reeding that's creeping onto the obverse near Liberty, and there is the gouge (if that's the word) on the reverse rim nearly parallel with the torch.

I don't see how those two "imperfections" could have happened in a mail sorter or anything very far from the minting machine. Did this come from a mint set or did you get an individual cello? What did the packaging itself look like? Was the dime loose in it's cell or stuck to the cello?

So many questions!
