I just bought the annual report for the nickel (of course :) and before I open the shrink wrapping, it looks like the nickel is sealed in the resin type goo as per the various coins/bookmarks available....is this the case? I'd like to send the coin off for grading but am wondering whether to take the report apart or not.

Its just in a capsule like the some of the uncirc sets. I have opened up the penny and 50c with no issues. I have also seen these in ICCS flips, just be a little careful trimming and removing the top piece of the capsule thingy.

Did I get the resin off? Not quite yet, lol. One side is complete but some residue left. I have been putting coins trapped like this in the quick freeze side on my fridge. :) The expansion and contraction with the temperature change seems to work somewhat. I haven't looked at the couple I have in the freezer for a month or so though.
Roger...how long does it take for the liquid nitrogen to do its thing?

Its tough stuff. Some say boil, or freeze.
The gold plating stayed on the silver ok with resin removal
The red poppy on the 2006(?) quarter I tried peeled off with the resin

I boiled mine. BTW - I had a really interesting error coin and eventually sold it on ebay.

Boiled, hmmm? I'll give it a go, lol. Sounds like a good job for tomorrow...I was worried the gold would come off.

Do I understand if I want to liberate the cent from the report, it will be covered in something. I figured it was housed in a capsule within the report. I guess my will never be freed. AS I don't want to bother with boiling or freezing it. They are nicely done coins. They seem to mark the era of lower mintage nclt coins.

I didn't have to boil mine at all for the cent and 50c. Just have to peel the back layer of plastic is the 5c different?
