A few of my more memorable purchases were:
1913-s Type 2 Buffalo for $75, ended up grading F12
1921 Peace for $35 sold for around $80 at a coinshow.
Also got a 1916 D Dime from the same antique store were I found the '21 peace.

I've had two in my life.
Once as a teenager I bought a bunch of large cents from someone at a garage sale...I sold them along with everything else the first time in my life I sold off my coin collection to buy what was then the coolest computer around. I guess that computer is worth about fifty bucks today, lol.

The second time was just recently on Craigslist I paid $100 bucks for a grab bag of us silver and foreign coins. I knew two of the twenty coins or so I could sell for $100 bucks a piece, so doubled my money and kept the rest.

Other than that, I never really get chance encounters or great luck

I think a lot of my older buys would be considered steals using today's prices. My 1899 Morgan I bought around 1990 for $65. I have it graded as an MS 63. One of my favorite Bust Halves I paid $75 for about 25 years ago. You tell me if it was worth it............

Another that comes to mind for me was at a garage sale bought 1984-2011 proof and uncirculated p&d sets for $100. The 1992 proof set was even silver! There was more just in face value than the $100. And last one actually happened today. 5 1oz silver Australian Wedge Tailed Eagles from Govmint for spot! 5 ounces of graded Gem BU silver for $78.90 shipping included! :D

Most-Outrageously-Cheap-Purchases.-Past-&-Present.

A couple years ago I was approached by my father in law to help appraise and liquidate a collection/hoard of silver and other type coins that a recently passed member of the church had left to his elderly mother.

She very generously insisted a 10% commission for the time I put in, which of course I opted for coin rather than cash.

Best from that lot is a F/VF 1921 Peace, and a BU Morgan.

I wouldn't say that my purchases were "outrageously cheap" but I do have a funny little story about a deal I got.

I was at a gun and knife show and there was a guy there who had a wealth of nazi memorabilia. He had knives, spoons, uniforms/hats, plates, a bunch of stuff. I asked him if he had any coins and he said, "Uh, I think I have a box actually" and he searched around under the table and brought out a small box with about a hundred foreign coins in it. Searching around in there I found 5 1930's - 1940's silver reichmarks of different denominations in there I asked the guy how much he wanted for the five coins and he kinda shrugged his shoulders and said "10 bucks?".

I didn't even haggle for him for two reasons. First reason was that I knew the retail of the coins were around $40 so I was getting a good deal. Second reason was because the longer I stayed at this guy's both it became awkwardly obviously that he probably had all this nazi memorabilia not so much because he was a history nerd but because he was probably a white supremacist.

previous page I said somethig along the lines that you would not believe me if I reveal my best purchase.
so now I feel compelled to post atleast something to back that up.

imagine a box, that has 6 x 30 cm rows and is filled with 2x2 flips
not the self adhesing slim ones but the older fatter flips that needed staples.
Nway its was full of russian coins and islamic (ottoman, hejaz) and indian coins
and a bunch of old russian wire coins.
for the box I payed 700€

here is only 2 examples.
granted, they are in the top 5 of the bunch

2 kopeks 1823 EM .. (can't type in russian for the rest)
