Around 1968 I met an old man that sold me 1909-vdb Lincoln's and other early date MM wheat's for 0.02 each. grades were good-fine. And for my present cheap purchase: About 6 months ago I bought an 1888 Liberty Head nickel (semi-key) problem free in F-12 for $4.

I once bought a G-4 1867 Shield nickel for $1.25! I also once bought two AU-50 Buffaloes for .70 cents each a couple years back.

An EF/AU Barber Half for $10 It was darkly toned, so I didn't realize how nice it was right away. I was going through a large coin collection someone was selling, making offers piece by piece. After just a quick glance, all I noticed was that the Barber was nicer than any I had so I offered 20 X face, instead of the usual 15X (this was about 2 years ago). When I got home, I looked at it more closely and realized it had great details and would likely grade EF45 or AU50. I sold it at a coin show for $175.

My most recent score is a blind Cherrypick toned 21 morgan for $50 which turned out to be a relatively rare and valuable 1b6 thornhead VAM. It's at pcgs now and might be good enough to disruption to the top pops, fingers crossed! https://goccf.com/t/240873

I caught the ebay bug a few months ago and have yet to shake free. I made a few bad purchases, wised up, and started bidding smarter. I usually pay a fair price, or a little less than the coin is worth. My more notable purchases: - Paid about $7 after shipping for a coin lot that contained a contemporary counterfeit 1810-A French 10 centimes. An identical coin sold recently for 75 euro. - Paid about $10 for a lot of old French coins. Seller accidentally included a 1643 double tournois and priced it as an 1855 10 centimes. - Paid $27 for a lot of 20 mixed "Late Roman" coins. Contained an XF/AU Theodora follis ($35 by itself), a quadrans of Claudius ($5), an unidentified Greek (almost certainly Lydia; if so worth up to $30), and the rest were reasonably nice 2nd-4th century bronzes.

Not near as good a deal as some others are posting... but just this past Sunday was able to pick up, 1914S and 1931D wheats and a 90% silver 1938A 5 Reichsmarks for a total of $30. I figure just paying melt on the Nazi coin at $6.50, $5 for the 31D and that leaves $18.50 for the 14S. Not terrible for the grades IMO

Probably this - the dealer must have just thrown it in the 5p tray with a load of worn Victorian pennies, not realising it was an 1869!
