And people never stop bidding on them. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1909-S-VDB-...AOSwT5tWK9M6Date is blurry, wrong mintmark (it's too clear) and the VDB is misaligned. If you draw a line from the left edge, or at least the gap, of the "B" it's supposed to be toward the left edge of the "E" in America. This one hits the "E"

Because the discussions linger on forever when there's no need and a lot of members are getting extremely irritated. Contrary to popular belief, a lot of people couldn't care less what goes on on ebay.

Drew , I feel Bobby is right in a sense. don't get me wrong ,I'm sure most members appreciate your detective work but it is getting a little to much now. I can see your concern for the community . but really, 7 out of 8 of your threads are about fakes ,scams ,altered dates ,and counterfeits . again; we love your enthusiasm and your concern for future numismatics.

I find the posts educational and interesting. There was a suggestion a while back about making this a sub topic, and that might be the solution if these posts are irritating some. On the subject of people not caring about what goes on with ebay, I think that it misses the point that ebay is just the forum where you can easily find the latest counterfeits and frauds going on, so it is a good place to find examples. I would never buy anything off of ebay, so I never visit the site, but appreciate others going through it and finding the latest frauds and counterfeits and providing the links for me.

I asked several threads back if it was irritating and people mostly said it wasn't...
I guess make a sub-forum then... :/

And see, T-Bop, I am part of the future of numismatics. Let's be honest here, there's a lot more numismatists who are over 50+ then there are in my generation, being 16 years old.
With the increase of counterfeits, it's best to continue to post this educational material, and what to look out for and debate on these coins. Not to mention, in say, 10 or more years, if this forum is still around, and the internet is still a popular thing (honestly don't think the internet will die out for at least another 50+ years), I hope people stumble upon my old threads if they still exist.

Why don't you just create a single thread for ebay fakes and then post to it when you find a new one? That way the discussion will be contained and can go on as long as it needs to and not clutter up the forum. I look at a lot of the coins you expose and occasionally look more to see if they are really a fake or not. I usually don't reply because I am not that well versed on them however.

I agree with n9jig, just use a single thread. I think your threads are interesting and educational but there are so many fakes on ebay it's futile to post them all in their own threads.

I think it's a great idea for a sub-forum about counterfeits and such. Knowledge is power.

A single thread would be mixing counterfeit morgans with altered pennies, etc. A sub forum would be easier for finding info on the particular type of forgeries or counterfeits you are interested in. I would prefer a sub forum.

I'm new so don't know exactly how things work, but if it were a democracy, I would vote for a sub-forum with threads for counterfeits by type/issue. I learn a lot from ebay's dirty laundry but don't have time to search it myself (thanks Drew ).

A separate subforum doesn't work for me for one main reason..... When a newbie comes here because he's inherited an 1885 CC Morgan and searches the classic US forum we are doing him a tremendous disservice if counterfeits don't show up in the results. If they're in another forum they will not. Keep in mind, 90% of the visitors here never post. I can picture the conversation when he takes it to a coin dealer and he's told it's counterfeit... "But I searched one of the biggest coin forums on the net and there was no mention of counterfeits."
"Well sir, it's one of the most counterfeited coins on the planet, I'm afraid it's time to find another forum."I'm leaning towards the best solution being locking the topic as soon as it's determined to be real or fake to prevent lingering unimportant posts. We don't need 30 people still telling us the coin is fake 6 months after the coins been taken down and dragging the topic back up to the top for no reason. Yes, it happens.

Kind of agree with n9jig...
Bobby, would you mind if I made an official counterfeit thread where I post links and stuff, so everytime it doesn't have to get locked? I don't know how that will work though, since some of them are modern and others aren't.

No, we're not putting them all in one topic. They need to be independent and searchable by title. The conversation does not need to go further once the coin is determined real or fake. It just doesn't, they turn extremely repetitive and it's pointless and annoying.
