Well, start be comparing the mintage of the 1921 with the less expensive coins. Is it quite a bit smaller?
If so, much of your answer is found.
I am not activly collecting these and am far from a RedBook so I cannot give you a solid answer.

If the mintage is near the same as the rest of the series the fun can began! Let us know what you find.

Hi, it is related to the mintage quantities. Only the 1916-D had fewer produced. For 1916, it was only minted in only two of the mints and combined production was a minor 2.3 million. Very small numbers actually.

The reason for the very low mintage of the 1916-D, according to wikipedia, is the need to fulfill a large order of quarters trumped dime production, so they stopped at a minuscule 264K.

Found a typo in the latest Red Book. On page 157 it states 11,230,000 for the mintage of the 1921 Mercury dime. Not sure of the real amount, but probably to many 11's there. Only a little more than 1 million minted.
Just looked it up. The 1,230,000 is what it should have been.

Carl the RedBook has had that error for two years now for the mintage of the 1921, you'd think they would correct it. The 4 lowest mintages of mercs are in order 1916d, 1921d, 1921, and 1926s. The last 3 had mintages of a little over a million while as stated the 1916d was 264k. Mintage is a huge aspect in determining prices in most cases.

The lower mintages in 1921 are due to a post WWI recession and the Mint having enough dimes on hand to meet demand. That's why there are no 1922 dimes.
