Dawson, 1 dollar, YT#10, mintage 10,000. 150 were struck in silver.
It is struck in "aureate steel", the material that loonies were made out of until 2012. This material was invented and patented by the Sherritt Mint and has the remarkable property of retaining its yellow colour no matter how much it is worn down or exposed to the air. Rumour has it that the reason for 2012's loonie and toonie change-up was so that the
RCM could stop paying Sherritt to manufacture all of its loonie blanks. (The "multi-ply plated steel" used in today's circulation coins is another innovation developed at Sherritt and aped by the
RCM - by adding an extra layer of copper between the nickel and steel, the
RCM was able to sidestep Sherritt's patent.)
My 2006 Pelletier catalog says that it's worth $3.00, which is unfortunately the lowest value that the catalog can assign. But tokens from the Territories are usually more desirable than tokens from other places.
When I went to Fort Steele in B.C., there was a bearded dude doing gold-panning demonstrations. Odds are he's the same guy who won the tournament in 1984.
