When the mint produces a new series of notes (series: 2001, 2004, etc.) What number do they start with? How would one know if they have a earlier print from their serial number, do they start at A000A? And, what do the letters mean before the numbers? (example: B00318088B)? and in the picture, I squared the things that I have no clue are... Hopefully you can help me figure out what they are!

Dillon,

Here's a little info to get you going...

U.S. currency is not produced by the mints, but rather by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C.

The black number "12" indicates the Federal Reserve district for which the note was produced, in this case, San Francisco.

Hope this helps!

Steve

Does each district print the same serial #'s
it would be really neat, and hard, to get matching numbers from multiple districts if they do

The L on the serial number and in the round seal corrosponds with the 12 (it is the 12th letter of the alphabet).

If you read the black seal that surrounds the large L you'll see that it says "San Francisco".

This seal with the district has been removed from the redesigned bills.

As far as I know the G at the end of the serial number is just part of the sequence. After they get through E, then they go to F, then they go to G.

I don't know if they start with A00000000A, but I do know that they have a 00000001.

I've heard that they usually pull the first 300 or so bills out of run so that they can sell them at a profit. So its hard to find a bill lower than 00000300.

I picked this bill out of circulation in the late 80's.

Instead of saying "Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco California" I think it now just says "Frederal Reserve Note" That is true of all 12 Federal reserve banks. As far as I know its on all bills $5 and up.

The only thing I have to add is the small "FW" next to the plate number means that this note was printed out of Fort Worth actually.
