Still learning about Large cents.

I noticed a coin with this attribution:

20+/12 scrs

But I don't know what it means. If anyone can nudge in me in the correct direction, I'd appreciate it.

Hey Steve!

Where do you see 20+/12 scrs? In what context?

It was part of a very short description in a mail order catalog I have. It gives the year, and Newcomb attribute, then it says:

"eac 20+/12 scrs and rim bump"

I saw EAC as "Early American Copper." But I didn't tie it in with the Early American Copper club itself. I don't belong to the EAC, and couldn't find any information on their site as to whether or not this was some designation they have devised.

What do you think?

maybe it's just the sellers grades with 20+ obverse & 12 reverse and additional notations of damage. I dunno.

EAC grade (they're generally harder on copper than TPG's and most non-copper collectors) VF20 Obverse, F12 Reverse with scratches and a rim bump. The coin referenced (if it slabbed due to the scratches) would likely be VF25.

Thank-you Super Dave. I *assumed* it meant something like you said. But wasn't sure.

Any members of the EAC chatting here? Wondering if "Penny-Wise" is still as good as its' reputation, and what resources are open to members. (?)

I would think that it means " this coin has an EAC grade of Sharpness VF-20+ with a net grade of F-12 because of light scratches"

And Yes I'm an EACer. Member #1947 since 1982. I still think PW is a swell publication. From what I have heard something we have been waiting on for a long time has finally begun showing up in our mailboxes. A DVD of the entire 40 years of PW. Searchable by year. (I don't believe they were able to make the entire disk searchable. You do have to search each year separately.) Something like 14,000 pages of information. Plus all of the EAC convention sale catalogs. Plus possibly a few more things. Free to all members and I believe the plan is to update it on a bi-annual basis. And of course their is the website, the back issues of the Region 8 emails, and you can join Region 8. Of course there is the annual EAC convention and sale. This year I believe it is in Dallas TX, next year it's in Cincinnati OH. There are the national census reports for Half Cents, middle dates, and late dates. (We are still trying to revive the early date census and if they don't get it going soon I'm going to take it back over again.)
