Hi Everyone, I have been looking for a Trade dollar for my type set recently after the last one I was looking at came back form NGC as a cleaned coin ( ). I found this one up for auction and I think I will be bidding on it. I haven't placed a bid on it yet, but I am seriously considering it. Opinions?

Nothing about it stands out to me as indicating it is a fake, although I am certainly not an expert. Although worn, it still retains enough detail that it would probably make a fine addition to a type set (assuming you weren't trying to fill your album with only MS examples).
I guess it all comes down to how much they want for it and how much you are willing to pay.

IMO, this is a genuine Trade dollar. Since the 1877 S is the most minted Trade dollar, I think you may be able to find an example of this coin with more obverse detail. Obviously, if cost is a factor, and you feel this is a good deal for the $, I think you'll be happy with this one. I see just honest wear with no dings or scratches.

This coin is graded by PCGS so I have no concerns about authenticity. I am just trying to make sure it is a nice coin for the grade. (VF-25) and that there are no problems with it.

On a coin like this, I think the eye appeal for you an important consideration with the darker fields, especially towards the rim. It otherwise seems like an honest coin for the wear.

Ah, you didn't mention what the grade was before. I think it's a nice example of a VF25 coin and, as I said, it seems to have enough details to make a fine addition to a type set if you can get it at a good price. Personally, I'd probably be willing to pay as much as $200 for it. Anything higher, and I'd probably go looking for a better example.

I like the toning and subtle circulation cameo. I would not be ashamed to see that one in my 7070.

Now am I seeing things, or is this a rpd? Fs-301?

Me personally, this is just my opinion. I don't like the way it looks. I would rather see a more even darkish tone on the coin. That is just the way I feel about it. If you like it then by all means go for it.

I concur with Steele on this ... not a pleasing coin to look at. I've bought pleasing XF's at shows in the $175 range. Also, if it's for a 7070, buy a raw one. Buy the coin, not the holder.
