I am interested in the actual mechanics that PCGS or others use to grade coins, are they digitally scanned and then compared to a digital ideal? Are they only done by people based on certain criteria?

Looked online, but couldn't really find what I was looking for, if anyone knows or can point me to an article that would be great.

Thanks
