So I was just perusing the 'Coins and Canada' site to check out the value of some of my old nickels, and noticed that the 1921 is worth a small fortune... but the site says there was over 2 million of them minted, so I'm wondering, why so valuable?
In May of 1921 legislation was passed to change to the nickel five cent piece, so most of those struck were melted down. Charlton says there are about 400 estimated to be in existence.
The entire stock of silver 1921 5 cent silver was melted when they switched to using nickel. Only an estimated 400 specimens remain, which were regular strikes sold to visitors or specimen strikes.
