Hello :)

I just started collecting copper pennies. I am planning on storing them in paper sleeves. However I have a few pennies that are green and rusted. Will they hurt the other pennies? Should I clean them somehow?

Don't store them together. Put them aside if common dates. Try to store your coins in the most humid free environment you can.

Are these pennies or cents? And by copper, what years? Early or modern? What Country? Make sure the paper sleeves are archival quality. I would probably keep the greenish ones with other greenish ones. And make sure you store the copper properly.

They're 1982 and older pennies from America. I guess I don't know the difference between pennies and cents lol. What do you suggest for proper storage? I was going with boxes in my basement.

Welcome to CC!

This corrosion is called verdigris. Coins that have it should be kept away from those that don't or it will spread to them. I call this "contact verdigris", it definitely happens.

If you want to keep your non-corroded coins nice, store them properly using multiple layers of protection. The paper coin wraps provide poor protection. You need to use coin tubes (I like the square type), ziplocks and tupperware....multiple layers, and store the coins in a controlled temperature environment.

Penny is commonly used for the smallest denomination, but the United States smallest denomination has never had the word penny on it. It is a cent. The use of penny carries over from the British penny.
Only coin collectors care that it is not really a penny, and some of us don't care that much!
But, if you are going to start collecting, it is good to know the terminology...you know what they say
In for a penny, in for a pound!

Are you keeping them for just the copper?
