Open mouth; insert foot.

Korean 1 Mun. Still working on figuring out who or when.

The trouble with these coins is that the exact same obverse was used for about 250 years, and only the reverse changed, but there are well over 5,000 different reverse varieties for that 250 year span.

The coin is a Sang Pyong Tong Bo coin with a denomination of One Mun.

From the reverse side (bottom image), the Chinese character at the top indicates that the coin was cast at the Treasury Department (Hojo) mint.

The Chinese character at the bottom means "yellow" (hwang) and comes from the The Thousand Character Classic: "Heaven is dark, the earth is yellow"

The Chinese character at the right means "six".

This coin is believed to have been cast in the year 1832.

manymore - Is there some books on how to translate coins like so that you know of, or have read? How'd you translate this?

I want to learn!
