First look (at least, for me) of the Shawnee 2016 ATB (proof) quarter. Also some nice photos of the dies used. I like the eagle soaring on the mirror field next to the elevated boulder but the lower part of the coin seems nondescript and dull.

So apparently 2016 proofs are already in production at the SF mint, or there are some prototypes they were able to sneak photos of.

Nice.

If I recall correctly, they can mint the coins ahead, but not release them.

Shawnee National Forest is my old stomping grounds, SIU was at the northern edge of the national forest and I climbed many bluffs and boulder fields while in college. The coin depicts a scenic overlook of sandstone formations at Garden of the Gods Recreation Area(southeastern Illinois, close to Kentucky and the Ohio River).

Looking at it more, I have a feeling I am going to like this one more than Fort Moultrie.

Fun fact... Moultrie County, IL (named for the same William Moultrie) is only about three hours from Shawnee.

biokemist6 & jack316:

Same here! Got a Biology degree & Music Performance degree from SIUC and learned the joys of backpacking/hiking at Little Grand Canyon, Giant City, River-to-River Trail, GotG, etc. I still miss the Makanda boardwalk to this day... I've since lived all over the country in some of the coolest spots (OR, N. Cali, AZ, CO, et al) on offer but I'll always have a soft-spot for S. Illinois, and especially the Shawnee. Really is an intellectual/cultural oasis in an otherwise barren region.
