How is this a "scarce date"?

Well mintage is just over 1.7 million which, by today's standards, is not THAT many. My LCS guy just said the same thing today though about it being scarcer date. They are the key dates for the series.

It's marketing hype. Every series doesn't have a key date.

The 1973P&D Ikes were only issued in Mint Sets and they have the lowest non-proof mintages of the entire series.

jbuck hit the nail on the head. Compare 1973's mintage to that of the 1976-P Type 2 business strike. That should put it in perspective.

I'm sure these aren't so common as people think.
At one time their value dipped as low as about $1.70 so it's not like the whole mintage is sitting in safety deposit boxes. A lot of these get lost, burned, and flooded. A few poor examples are intentionally spent.
I'd be surprised if there are even a million left and the bulk of these are poorly made and heavily scratched. Nice clean examples from either mint are quite desirable. Extremely clean Denver issues are quite scarce.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

They were circulated... in very small numbers. A mint sewn bag turned up in Florida about eight or nine years ago.
Still, think about this ... a million coins struck for collectors are likely to still exist - in mint state.... they will never be rare. They will never be scarce. True, most examples in mint sets won't grade higher than MS64.... enough MS65s exist at present to satisfy demand. MS66s have come way down in price. You can get a quality one for about $1000. A PQ one - for 2 or 3 times that....
Still, a 1973 mint set is nothing to write home about. Paying extra for it is unnecessary.

Aren't the 1973-S Silver proof ikes, like, worth around $50 in OGP and certified PF-69 DCAM worth like $60-70
