I notice that these designated coins typically sell for substantial premiums over other coins. I've noticed that the star coins seem to sell for a bigger premium than the plus designated coins do. I just saw an awesome 81 CC GSA ms64+*, carrying both designations. This coin would obviously be a really good investment coin IMO.

What exactly does the + & * grades mean? Is the star for superb eye appeal? Does the + mean it's almost a 65? The premiums are substantial.

NGC & PCGS assigns a + (plus) to coins at the high end of their assigned grade, approaching the quality requirements for the next grade. In addition to their superior technical merit, coins receiving a plus designation must have above-average eye appeal.

The plus grade was created to counter the impact of CAC and the Green and Gold sticker. It did not work because all CAC did was sticker the plus graded coins, and CAC will not sticker all plus graded coins.

NGC assign a star to coins with exceptional eye appeal for their grade.

I have seen some NGC coins with a plus, star and a CAC sticker.

The premium for the star is not only driven by the nice eye appeal, plus the NGC registry awards extra points for the star coins above the standard grade.

I have an angle on an 85 CC ms65* GSA coin for about 2k. The fella selling it, a coin shop owner in KY, says there's very low numbers of this coin given its 65* status.

I wonder if this is a good price? I've seen the coin twice, it's a beautifully rainbow toned coin.

You may want to consider buying the coin. If you could get the CAC sticker, it would most likely go up in value another 15%. CAC does like to sticker nice coins for the grade with solid strikes and rainbow toning. I have not seen a lot of GSA coins with the CAC sticker.

Is 2k a good price for this coin? He says he can get 2500-3000 grand for it, but that he doesn't know for sure if he wants to even sell it. I had a little over 2k cash on me and he was going to let me have it for 2k at the time, I backed out.

If you look at the Heritage realized and ebay completed sales the NGC MS65 GSA 1885CC has a range from $1400 to $2085 in the past six months. These coins did not have a star or rainbow toning. The star and rainbow toning will command a premium.

There was on GSA 1885CC that did sell for about $1200, but I threw this coin out because it looked like it did not belong in a GSA MS65 holder.
