I've found plenty of "Hobo" half dollars that people decided to enhance with magic marker toupees all the way to using an electric engraving adding a beard or adding lazer beam eyes like Cyclops and marking it X-Men.

I searched my first box of halves today, and there were plenty of painted ones. I didn't get any like that, though.

I haven't found any hobo nickels but I have found a couple other PMD coins. I just searched a box this week and found 2 holed 1960's era nickels in different rolls in the same box. Both appeared to be drilled and strung for some time as the holes were pretty well cornered out.

When you say Hobo Nickel do you mean the classic old kind or modern ones? Big difference in values. By the way,I have never found one. John1

If you want to know what a "new" hobo nickel looks like, ebay will provide you with an education.

Either kind. Of course the old ones would be much better, but a newer one would also be a good find.
CotW- You ought to try some. You get a lot more keepers, at least in early dates. I've searched $352 and have already gotten 93 pre-1960 coins, including 2 buffaloes (1913 T1 & 1936), as well as 8 dated 2009.

I found one that someone started making into a hobo nickel but never finished. I'll see if I can get a pic up later.
